Given(TM) Capsule Endoscopy offers the first real opportunity to conveniently examine the lining of the small bowel. Initial studies have indicated its value in diagnosing patients with obscure bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract or iron deficiency anaemia of unclear cause. Usually colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and appropriate biopsies and often bowel X Rays, nuclear scans, enteroscopy and angiograms will have been performed previously without a cause having been found.

Additional roles may be found in the diagnosis of the cause of diarrhoea, malabsorption and abdominal pain, or in the assessment of other conditions such as Crohn's disease.

Riverview Endoscopy in conjunction with Bethesda Hospital offers Capsule Endoscopy to patients who fulfil a number of criteria relevant to the above conditions and who may benefit from its use in diagnosis.

The major contraindication to Capsule Endoscopy is the possibility of strictures or narrowings in the bowel which might impede the natural passage of the Capsule. We ask all patients who are considering undertaking the test to read the accompanying instruction and consent forms. Further we point out that there is no Medicare or Private Health Fund benefit for the test and, because the procedure uses extremely expensive disposable equipment, ALL costs are required to be paid BEFORE the test is performed.
