Procedure preparation

  • How would I be prepared for a colonoscopy?

Please refer to our Colonoscopy information sheet

  • I started taking my bowel prep an hour ago and nothing has happened?

Be patient. It can sometime take a couple of hours for it to work. We recommend relaxing at home and drinking plenty of water during this time.

  • Are you anaesthetised for the procedure?

Dr Mollison, Dr Lim and Dr Muwanwella work with experienced and professional anaesthetists who will sedate you for the length of the procedure. Sedation is used as you do not suffer the same after effects as a general anaesthetic however you will still be unconscious for your procedure. Because we do use sedation you will not be able to drive for 24 hours after your procedure and will need to arrange for someone to pick you up from the hospital. If you do not have anyone to collect you the hospital is able to arrange a taxi for you. You will not be able to catch public transport, nor walk home alone.

  • How long am I expected to be at the hospital?

From the time of your arrival to discharge your total time will be about four hours depending on how quickly you recover.

  • Will I be able to go to work the next day?

You should be fine to go to work the next day however if you are in physical employment you may feel more comfortable resting on this day as the after effects of the sedation can continue for up to 24 hours.
